We live by the highest standards for hazardous materials transport containers for critically defective lithium batteries, in accordance with the latest hazardous materials regulations of ADR P911/LP 906, including permits for the collection, transport, and brokerage of hazardous waste in waste management and recycling logistics.
Lithium-ion batteries are classified as Class 9 dangerous goods under ADR (UN 3480, UN 3481, UN 3090, UN 3091). Even minor mechanical damage, deep discharge, or an internal short circuit can trigger what is known as thermal runaway—a self-sustaining exothermic reaction that produces large amounts of toxic fumes and can cause the cell pressure to rise to the point of explosion.
The time delay is critical: A battery that appears externally stable after an accident or fall may react hours or days later. For this reason, hazardous materials regulations require type-approved packaging for damaged and critically defective batteries that can contain a thermal runaway in a single cell. While dangerous goods regulations are harmonized across Europe under the ADR, national waste laws vary from country to country—including requirements for documentation, authorized collection points, and cross-border waste shipments. Damaged and critically defective lithium-ion batteries may only be transported by hazardous materials logistics providers with the appropriate certification and exclusively in type-approved containers.
The applicable regulations are ADR packing instructions P908 and P911, as well as large packaging instructions LP904 and LP906. LogBATT GmbH, the battery logistics company of the Lagermax Group, carries out such shipments throughout Europe.
Packaging instruction P911 applies to critically defective lithium-ion batteries, and LP906 applies to large packages. Both require type-tested, officially approved packaging capable of containing a thermal runaway in a single cell. LogBATT GmbH’s dangerous goods containers are BAM-tested and approved for this purpose.
In Germany, the disposal of lithium-ion battery waste requires certification as a specialized waste management company in accordance with Section 56 of the Closed-Loop Economy Act, supplemented by a permit to collect, transport, and broker hazardous waste.
